The Host Company
This company produces unique mapping solutions for cities and complex buildings. The business was created by the team responsible for the Legible London wayfinding project – a global standard in wayfinding design and city movement and awareness.
The company has advanced the field of legible mapping for urban and interior spaces, has developed a platform that supports walking and other soft mode travel and has a unique business model that will advance the mapping field significantly. The business is now expanding rapidly and is developing and implementing applications for cit-ies, campuses and airports worldwide.

Searched Profile

The host company is looking for a Back End software developer helping to create mapping websites and applica-tions to delight their users.
The intern will collaborate with designers, software developers and geospatial engineers. The selected candidate will work across the full stack to improve the business core platform and to develop prototype applications to ex-plore their future direction.
The intern will be developing the company’s backend technology as well as a web-based CMS to change the map data in their system. Therefore, the role requires primarily Java, but also Scala and JavaScript proficiency.
The right candidate will work with GIS and frontend developers, and alongside the map designers responsible for well-known way-finding projects around the world.
The company has offices in Bath and London. The internship will be placed in Bath.

Start date
As soon as possible.
Upper-Intermediate English knowledge. B2 level minimum.
• Developing enhancements using a test-first process using Java, Scala and JavaScript.
• Working on specifications for enhancements to the core platform.
• Prototyping imaginative technology directions for the company.
• Improving the continuous integration and the deployment process.
• Looking after the cloud computing infrastructure.
Personal Skills
• Proficiency in Java.
• Experience developing well-tested software.
• Comfortable working across a team with people of different skills.
• Ability to work in a self-directed way.
• Ability to pick up and evaluate new technologies.
• Competence with Git.
• Knowledge of web standards.
• Able to work with databases, both manually and programmatically.
• Knowledge of Scala and SQL would be beneficial.
• Interest in GIS.
• Experience with the Play web framework.
