What do you know about Universities in Belgium?

There are many universities in the country so this article will provide a synthesis of all the campuses in Belgium. We also compared the tuition fees in Walloon universities and Flemish universities and an idea of the level of the studies in our universities in comparison to the best universities in the world thanks to the Shanghai Ranking. Finally, we compared the cost of living in the cities of the country that are frequented the most by students.

The Walloon universities

UCL (Université Catholique de Louvain)
The UCL counts no less than 14 faculties and is mainly based in Louvain-La-Neuve but some of the faculties are located in the region of Brussels (Woluwe and Saint-Gilles) and in Wallonia (Mons, Tournai and Charleroi). It is the biggest university in Wallonia regarding the number of students.
The UCL possesses one of the most prestigious shool of Economics and Management in the country, the LSM (Louvain School of Management)

ULG (Université de Liège)
38 Bachelor's degrees and more than 200 Master's degrees are available among the 9 faculties of the ULG. These faculties are implanted in Liège, Gembloux and Arlon. With more than 600 partners all around the globe, the university considers itself as an international institutions.
As the UCL, the University of Liège can brag about having a great school of Ecnomics and Management which is the HEC.

ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles)
The ULB is located in the capital of the country. The three campuses of the university are Erasme, Plaine and Solbosch but it is also present in Charleroi. The ULB members think of it as a multicultural institution with, for instance, master's degrees available in English.
The equivalent of the LSM and HEC in Brussels is in the ULB and is called the Solvay Business School.

USL-B (Université Saint-Louis Bruxelles)
It is the second university of Brussels. The USL-B is where you need to be if you want a specialisation in social science.

UMons (Université de Mons)
The university of Mons only exists since 2009 and is located in the province of Hainaut, in Mons and Charleroi to be accurate.

The Flemish universities

KUL (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
The Catholic University of Louvain is the biggest of Belgium with campuses spread in 11 cities (Leuven, Kortrijk, Antwerp, Gent, Bruges, Geel, Ostend, Diepenbeek, Saint-Catherine-Wavre, Aalst an Brussels). Despite its name, KUL is completely independent from UCL. Founded in 1425, it is also one of the oldest universities in Europe.

UA (Universiteit Antwerpen)
Founded in 2003, the University of Antwerp defines itself as young and dynamic. It represents 19.155 students following courses in 9 faculties, which makes of the UA the third most important university in Flanders.

UGent (Universiteit Gent)
The University of Gent has the peculiarity of having been established by King William of Orange in 1817. The two campuses of the Ugent are situated in Gent and Kortrijk (Faculty of Industrial Engineering). It is considered as one of the most prestigious universities of Belgium and the fact that 3 Nobel Prize winners have taught there proves that it deserves its reputation.

VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)
Just like the KUL regarding the UCL, the VUB is also independent from the ULB (and this since 1970). Most of the campuses of the VUB are located in Etterbeek but the Faculty of Medicine can be found in Jette.

Odisee
Odisee was born in 2014 after the fusion of the HUB (Hoogeschool-Universiteit Brussel) and the KAHO (Katholieke Hogeschool Sint‑Lieven). All 6 campuses of Odisee are spread in the cities of Brussels, Aalst, Gent and Sint-Niklaas.

UH (Universiteit Hasselt)
Diepenbeek and Hasselt are the two cities sharing the faculties of the UH. With only about 6.000 students the UH is far from being the biggest university of the country. The university also possesses 7 research centers.
