You're (almost) graduated đ and thinking about your first job. Maybe you've heard the word "audit" thrown around and thought: sounds serious... but what is it actually? Good news: we're happy to explain.
So, what is audit really? đ
In simple terms, audit means checking whether a companyâs numbers are accurate. Not guesswork, but a thorough analysis of a companyâs financial health. You look at balance sheets, annual accounts, and internal processes to ensure everything complies with the rules. You help companies stay transparent, provide investors with reliable information, and keep the economy running smoothly. Pretty important, right?
What exactly do you do as an auditor at EY?
- You dive into the numbers of companies, from local NGOs to global players
- You analyze data, check documentation, and learn how a company really works
- You work in a team and learn from experienced colleagues
- You develop a helicopter view of different sectors and their challenges
- Youâre often on-site at the clientâs office, where you interact directly with their staff from day one
In short: you get a unique behind-the-scenes look at the business world and build real relationships with clients.
Why do students choose audit at EY?
1. Every day is different
You work with different clients across a range of industries. One week you might be at a sustainable energy start-up, the next at an international manufacturing company.
2. You learn incredibly fast
Audit is an intensive learning experience. With coaching, training, and teamwork, youâll grow from a hesitant beginner into a confident professional. You'll learn to manage deadlines, communicate with clients, and think critically.
3. Teamwork makes the job work
Auditors always work in teams. Sometimes small, sometimes up to 20 colleagues, depending on the clientâs size. You collaborate closely and are never on your own. Each client team organizes teambuilding activities, and there are also department-wide events to boost team spirit.
4. Busy and quiet periods alternate
From January to May is "busy season", a time to learn a lot in a short period. But you're never alone; your team has your back. Thanks to the intense collaboration, time flies. In the summer, itâs âlow season,â with a more relaxed work schedule and more time to recharge. That balance keeps you energized.
Who can start in audit at EY?
Audit is more accessible than you might think. These are the typical backgrounds we see:
- Master in (Applied) Economics
- Master in Business Engineering or Business Administration
- Bachelor in Accountancy â Taxation
- No economics degree? No problem! Even with a non-economic masterâs, youâre welcome, if you're motivated and curious about the financial world.
What matters most is your eagerness to learn, sense of responsibility, and critical mindset. đ
Do you need to be a math genius?
Nope. Of course, you should be comfortable with numbers, but audit is mainly about logical thinking, structure, critical analysis, and teamwork. Excel and EYâs digital tools support you with the rest. And you learn a lot on the job, so you donât need to know everything from the start.
Audit = a career kickstart
With a background in audit, youâll have a head start wherever your path takes you:
- You develop strong analytical and communication skills
- You learn to work with clients and meet deadlines
- You build a solid network inside and outside EY
Whether you aim to grow within EY or become an entrepreneur, this is where it all begins.
