October 2023 marked the beginning of an exciting chapter for Luca, who started the International Talent Programme (ITP) with a clear vision and boundless enthusiasm. “I was particularly drawn to the programme’s three-rotation format, which promised a deep understanding of various aspects of risk management and an international outlook.”

Ciao Italia, hello world!

Luca's passion for diverse cultural experiences has led him to the ITP. This adventure is certainly exciting for him, but it comes with its own set of challenges.

"For me, joining the ITP is about stepping out of my comfort zone, leaving behind my country and old friends. And it turns out to be an opportunity for me to discover more about myself, push my limits, overcome my shyness - yes, even Italians can be shy sometimes - and improve my communication skills."

Transform obstacles into opportunities

Luca's role in the ITP has been a whirlwind of activity. In his two first rotations, Credit Risk and Modelling, he tackled the crucial job of analysing client data and assessing creditworthiness, turning numbers into actionable insights. It wasn’t just about data; it was about grasping risk factors and aligning them with guidelines, giving him a solid grounding in risk management. The Modelling rotation was where Luca really shone. With his manager's support, he took the lead in developing a new risk model, handling detailed data analysis, improving the model, and coordinating with stakeholders.

“Not everyone in a junior position has the chance to play an important role

in the development of a new risk model.”

“One of the biggest challenges we faced was managing delays and communication breakdowns between teams, risking the project timeline. I tried to step in to bridge gaps between teams, organised regular check-ins, and tackled problems together. My efforts kept everyone aligned and the project on track, delivering a model that met expectations. This experience strengthened my technical skills and taught me the value of teamwork and leadership.

Adapt to the challenge, be part of the change

“Since joining the ITP, I’ve learned to adapt in fast-paced environments, handling complex challenges and creating collaboration among diverse teams.”

Luca discovered his strength in communication and resilience. ITP broadened his view of the banking industry and deepened his passion for risk management, particularly in data-driven decision-making and model development.

“I’ve brought a fresh perspective, strong problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset to my teams. I’m enthusiastic about tackling challenges and have contributed meaningfully to projects. My ability to bridge gaps and adapt communication styles has been valuable, and I’ve learned the importance of seeking feedback and listening to everyone. This adaptability will positively impact both my career and personal life.”

“ITP gives me freedom to connect with senior leaders easily,

learning from their experiences, boosting my own transformation.”

He also shared his personal growth. “Back in university, I wasn’t the most organised person. But ITP has really helped me find balance in my life. Now, I manage my free time, work, diet, and even fit in morning workouts. Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep challenging myself internationally, exploring new countries and different challenges within ING.”

A message for the future ITP community

“Don’t hesitate to chat with anyone, no matter their role. You’ve got nothing to lose!” Luca shares his advice with those who are considering joining the ITP.

“Stay open to new tasks and new places; it’s all part of the ITP adventure. Accept the challenges, too—managers within ING are supportive, but also love to test you, so go for it and give it your all.”

About Luca

Luca’s Italian charm makes talking to him instantly effortless. Growing up at the lively Italy-France border, he has always been fascinated by the mix of cultures. His multicultural background shaped his sociable nature and love for diverse experiences. With 18 years of football experience, including a spot on the ING team now, Luca loves connecting with friends and being around people by discovering all kinds of sports. He can also talk about cars for hours.
