We spoke to Jolien Geenens, who started as one of the first Trainees in Infrabel's ICT Traineeship. She told us all about this programme and how it helps talented young people grow in the ICT sector.
What is the ICT Traineeship?
In 2018, Infrabel kicked off the ICT Traineeship, and Jolien was there from the start. Since then, the programme has known nothing but growth, with 46 participants this year and 50 expected in September. It lasts for nine months and is a great opportunity for young professionals to learn and grow in the ICT world.
Jolien explains: "You work on the programme one day a week and the rest of the week you form a normal part of your team. That way, you can both learn quickly and also fit in well."
A dip into the Traineeship
The Traineeship is divided into three phases: Discovery, Ekiden and ICTFlows. During the Discovery phase, you are introduced to Infrabel's ICT world through interactive information sessions and workshops. Then in the Ekiden phase (named after a long-distance relay race from Japan), various aspects of ICT expertise are linked together by means of hands-on projects. Finally, in the ICTFlows phase, you focus on collaboration, process awareness, data and the discovery of new technologies.
Growth as a professional
Jolien emphasises that the Traineeship is not just about developing technical skills. It is also the chance to expand your network, build presentation skills and improve your language skills. During the Traineeship, you have the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals within Infrabel and you are encouraged to shape your own career path. "It's not just about technology, you also grow on a personal and professional level," says Jolien.
Advantages and challenges
The Traineeship offers many benefits, such as learning new skills quickly, the opportunity to build a broad network and discover the complex world of railways.
Along with the many advantages, there are also challenges. Jolien explains: "The Traineeship is very enriching, but it can be challenging to combine it with your day-to-day work. Fortunately, there is plenty of support available to deal with this."
Future prospects
After the Traineeship, there are many opportunities to grow further at Infrabel. With continuous training and the chance to choose your own career path, you can really fulfil your ambitions.
More than just a programme, the ICT Traineeship at Infrabel is a springboard to a successful career in the ICT world. With a strong focus on growth, development and support, the programme offers young professionals the chance to realise their potential and achieve their career goals. Jolien concludes: "The Traineeship opens doors to a promising future in the ICT world."
