Every year, thousands of European students cross the Channel to study at some of the world’s most prestigious universities. For Belgian students, the UK offers a world-class education just a short Eurostar ride away from home. However, since Brexit, applying requires more strategic planning than ever before.
Whether you are aiming for London or Scotland, here is what Belgian students need to know to successfully secure a spot at a UK university.
Why Choose the UK?
- World-Renowned Prestige: The UK is home to globally elite institutions like Oxford, Imperial, and UCL that carry massive weight on your CV.
- English Fluency: Immersing yourself in a UK academic environment perfects your professional English, giving you a distinct edge in the job market.
- Proximity: You get to study abroad in a completely different academic culture while remaining just a couple of hours away from Brussels.
Decoding the UCAS System
In the UK, admission is highly competitive and centralized through UCAS.
- The Rule of Five: You can apply to a maximum of five university courses per year.
- The Personal Statement: You write one 4,000-character essay that goes to all your chosen universities. It must highlight your academic passion, focusing 80% on subject interest and 20% on extracurriculars.
Entry & Language Requirements
UK universities do not use the Belgian grading system. They will translate your CESS or Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs into their "A-Level" equivalents.
- Top-tier universities often require an overall average of 8.5/10 to 9/10 (85%–90%).
- Mid-tier universities typically look for 7/10 to 8/10 (70%–80%).
Unless you attend an international English-speaking school in Belgium, you must also prove your English proficiency. This is usually done via an IELTS exam, with most universities requiring a score between 6.0 and 7.5.
The Post-Brexit Reality: Fees & Visas
Brexit significantly changed the administrative landscape for EU students.
- Tuition & Funding: Belgian students now pay "International" tuition fees, typically ranging from £15,000 to £35,000+ per year. Because you no longer qualify for UK government student loans, researching university-specific scholarships for EU students is essential.
- Scholarships and Funding: as Belgian students are generally no longer eligible for UK student loans, alternative funding options include:
- University scholarships, including EU transition and international merit awards
- Belgian or European study-abroad grants and scholarships, which can be competitive
- Student Visas: You can no longer study in the UK with just a Belgian ID card. You must apply for a Student Route Visa after receiving an unconditional offer. This process includes paying an Immigration Health Surcharge for full access to the NHS.
Accommodation and Student Life
In your first year, you are almost always guaranteed a room in University Halls of Residence. This setup is the easiest way to make international friends. Furthermore, UK student life relies heavily on student-run clubs called "Societies." Joining these groups is the cornerstone of your university social experience.
Your Application Timeline
If you want to start in September, apply the year prior:
- October 15: Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, and most Medicine courses.
- End of January: The "Equal Consideration" deadline for all other courses.
- May/June: Take your final Belgian secondary school exams.
- August: Receive final grades, confirm your spot, and apply for your visa.
