Every year, Infrabel welcomes numerous trainees who receive on-the-job training. Romain Wautier (21) was one of them in March 2021 and was then recruited as a mechanic. Why does Infrabel so resolutely choose trainees? Sten Raeymakers, technical administrative assistant at the Port of Antwerp, explains. 🚆
"We at Infrabel decided to take trainees under our wing because we noticed that vacancies for technical profiles remain open (too) long," says Sten. "But above all, it is the ideal way for school-age young people to be able to put theory into practice in a dynamic and technical environment."
For Romain, Infrabel is not entirely unknown. His father also works for the infrastructure manager, so he had an interest in the railway world from childhood. After his traineeship, he applied and became a statutory employee. "I was welcomed with open arms and soon found my place within the team. Infrabel is actually one big family." 🙌
"Our colleagues are happy to welcome trainees," Sten says. "They love to mentor and train young people, often because they are very motivated to get to work on specific railway matters that in practice does differ from what they learnt at school."
Romain also agrees. "I received some excellent guidance from my traineeship mentor, which allowed me to develop an awful lot of new skills in a short period of time." Finally, Sten says that traineeships at Infrabel are a win-win because he and his team can also learn something from young people: the evolution of materials, certain ways of thinking, etc.
Romain recommends that everyone take a traineeship at Infrabel and describes his own course as unique, varied and fascinating. Interested too? Discover all the vacancies 👇
