Do you work as a student to pay for your studies, gain experience, or simply enjoy student life a bit more? We’ve got good news for you!
Since 2025, students have been allowed to work up to 650 hours per year under a student contract — and this measure remains in place in 2026. That’s more than the temporary increase to 600 hours in 2023 and 2024, and well above the former limit of 475 hours, which is now a thing of the past 🎉
What does this mean in 2026?
🕒 Up to 650 student work hours per year
In 2026, students can still work up to 650 hours per year under the advantageous student employment system. As long as you stay within this limit, you benefit from reduced social security contributions, keep more of your net salary, and your parents’ family benefits remain unaffected — provided you also stay below the applicable income thresholds.
In short: more flexibility, more earning potential, and fewer financial downsides while studying ✅
👉 Don’t forget to register your hours via Student@work to stay below the limit and keep all your advantages.
👶 Student jobs from the age of 15
As of 2025, you’re allowed to work as a student starting at 15 years old, even if you haven’t yet completed two years of secondary school. This is a first, giving younger students the chance to gain work experience and earn some pocket money.
💰 Earn up to €12,000 without affecting your parents’ benefits
The tax-free threshold for family allowance and study grants is being raised to €12,000 net per year. As long as you stay below this amount:
- your parents won’t lose their child benefits
- they’ll keep their right to study grants
- you won’t pay higher taxes
👉 In short: you can work more and earn more, without administrative stress or financial drawbacks.
