What is the difference between a traineeship and an internship?

A traineeship and an internship differ mainly in their target audience and duration. An intern is usually still a student and is looking to gain practical experience to prepare for their first job. A trainee, on the other hand, has usually already graduated and wants to gain professional experience first. A traineeship is often seen as a genuine entry-level position, with real career prospects within the company.

What is an EU traineeship and how does it work?

An EU traineeship is a programme run by the European Union in which young professionals gain practical experience within EU institutions. It usually lasts between 5 and 12 months and offers the chance to work alongside people from all over Europe. You'll work on topics such as climate change, the economy and education, while building a wide network and gaining valuable experience in international cooperation.

As a recent graduate, landing your first job isn’t always easy. Sure, you’ve gathered plenty of knowledge, but you might not have had many chances to put that knowledge into practice just yet. And that’s exactly the kind of experience many companies expect from their employees. Luckily, a lot of companies are aware of this and offer traineeships to bridge the gap.

Traineeships are work and learn programs where companies give young, ambitious starters the opportunity to gain their first real work experience, while also figuring out which direction they want to grow in. Over the course of a few years, you’ll work in different jobs and departments, sometimes even in various roles within the same department.

So, why would you qualify? If you’ve recently earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree, you’re already eligible, and in a wide range of fields. Think IT, business management, engineering, marketing, production, HR and sales.

What makes a traineeship different from most internships? For starters, you do it after graduating, and you’re actually hired as a full-time employee, meaning you get a proper salary. Most internships, on the other hand, are unpaid.
